Torrini grew up in Kópavogur, where, at the age of 7, she joined a choir as a soprano, until she went to opera school at the age of 15. In 1994, she became well-known in Iceland after winning the song competition of junior colleges in Iceland (Icelandic: Söngkeppni framhaldsskólanna), at the age of 17, singing "I Will Survive".

Her father is Italian and her mother is Icelandic. Because of name regulations in Iceland at the time, her father Salvatore Torrini had to change his name to "Davíð Eiríksson", which also implied that Emilíana Torrini had to use the surname after her father in the traditional way; "Emilíana Torrini Davíðsdóttir". A few years later, the name regulations were changed,[1] and she was again allowed to use her original surname.[2][3]

She grew up with her parents in Iceland. Her father owns and operates a well-known Italian restaurant in Iceland (Italia, located at Laugavegur 11 in Reykjavik) where she once worked as a waitress. After playing a session of gigs in London, Torrini decided to stay and live there. She has one child, a son, who was born September 6, 2010.

Mats Meguenni - NORWAY (Bergen) / POLAND (Cracow)

The very first edition of Polish "X Factor" was inaugurated by Mats' performance. He is 23-year-old Norwegian who has been living in Poland for 4 years. His Polish girlfriend taught him our national language, which is very challenging for foreigners, moreover he studies medicine here - and we all know how difficult faculty of medicine is... It would be enough to impress me, however this is supposed to be about music. Fortunately he's got everything it takes also in this case. It would be hard for him not to gain audience admiration with all his positive features, including most important - great voice. He had female member of jury (Maja Sablewska) in his pocket by dedicating her song "Angels", he found common language with Czesław Mozil - Polish / Danish singer ('Czesław Śpiewa', 'Tesco Value'), even most severe judge (Kuba Wojewódzki) took to him. As a result Mats heard 3 times "TAK" (which means "yes" in Polish, not "thank you") and he got to the next level. I hope there will be a lot of more opportunities to hear his voice... For now I encourage to watch his first performance.

Her new album "Goods" will be released 30th March. "Just like on the last album, Edda guides you around with her vivid lyrics and her adventurous voice, but on "Goods" it's no longer just Edda's piano playing that forms the musical backbone; now there's full orchestration, strange keyboards, electric sitars and choirs of Russian sailors. The music moves us through cities and jungles, down to the harbor where the trawlers are leaving for Japan. Edda's distinctive piano playing leads us into back streets with garbage dumps and magpies' nests. From a disco booms "Handsome" from the dance floor, and then we're taken out on a sailing trip over rolling waves, escalating up to the star strewn "Ancient Star My Innocent Heart". Edda's lyrics are primarily depictions; sometimes they are magical situations from everyday life, sometimes whole stories are being told. In the playful lyrics you can occasionally even sense a political undertone, as in "Magpie's Nest".
