ICONA POP - SWEDEN (Stockholm)

This time my inner need for musical exploration was satisfied by Jonas Pernholm, so I can say I got to know about Icona Pop at first hand. ;-)  However this is a kind of satisfaction, which is followed by stronger desire for more... I really want more of Icona Pop! Although I still can't get "Manners" out of my head, there is lots of space for rest great songs. This beautiful female duo playfully teases my sense of hearing by unconventional modern electro sounds, never monotonously predictible, which is perfect 'cause this sense should be stimulated variously ;-)

I will definitely keep my eye on them and complement this post when something new appears. By now you can also:
  • Check out Icona Pop’s official site to download an instrumental version of “Manners".
  • Get more news and all tour dates on MySpace

(Etymology)

This is my own, simpliest etymology - 'icona pop' in Italian /unsurprisingly/ means 'pop icon'.
I guess everyone knows what 'pop icon' is, but it's always good to confront colloquial knowledge with dictionary definition. One of them says:
'A pop icon is a is a celebrity whose popularity (hence, "pop") remains constant or even increases as time goes by.'
It would be wonderful if this band name became self-fulfilled prophecy.

Aino Neneh Jawo

Caroline and Aino came to the world’s attention thanks to a track ‘Manners’, which was released on  Kitsuné Maison 10 “The Fireworks Issue” in November 2010, it encouraged girls to follow this up by self-releasing, and giving away for free their new single ‘Still Don’t Know’.

As an added bonus they share an extended dub of 'Manners' with anyone who signs up to the mailing list on their new website.

On March 21th, 2011 they released AA-side debut single "Manners"/"Top Rated" through Neon Gold.  “Manners” was produced by Patrick Berger the man behind last years all conquering Robyn smash “Dancing On My Own”. It gets good reviews and brings lots of new fans.
Currently girls have been working hard in the studio, hopefully we'll hear something new from them very soon.

Edda Magnason - SWEDEN (Malmö)

“Edda Magnason” is one of the best albums of 2010 according to Svenska Dagbladet:
“A stylish and quirky melting pot of jazz, folk, pop. Edda Magnason emerges as a musical personality of great stature, intuitive, intelligent and poetic. Lyrics, composition, vocals, piano playing, arrangement – everything is at a high artistic level. ” Ingrid Strömdahl
Her new album "Goods" will be released 30th March. "Just like on the last album, Edda guides you around with her vivid lyrics and her adventurous voice, but on "Goods" it's no longer just Edda's piano playing that forms the musical backbone; now there's full orchestration, strange keyboards, electric sitars and choirs of Russian sailors. The music moves us through cities and jungles, down to the harbor where the trawlers are leaving for Japan. Edda's distinctive piano playing leads us into back streets with garbage dumps and magpies' nests. From a disco booms "Handsome" from the dance floor, and then we're taken out on a sailing trip over rolling waves, escalating up to the star strewn "Ancient Star My Innocent Heart". Edda's lyrics are primarily depictions; sometimes they are magical situations from everyday life, sometimes whole stories are being told. In the playful lyrics you can occasionally even sense a political undertone, as in "Magpie's Nest". Sometimes there are no words at all and then the music tells the whole story, as in “Hur jag föreställer mig det är att segla (How I Imagine Sailing)” or the song "Camera" where the single line, "Have you seen the world in that one million camera?" transports us to a new place on earth each time it is sung... LYKKE LI - SWEDEN (Stockholm)

Lykke Li has been waiting impatiently for 'her time to come', 'breaking her back', but she knew she 'will get it back' and our 'hands will clap'. This is exactly what she got when her time came in 2007. The world fell at her feet. It's impossible to stay indifferent to her. She definitely sticks out from the crowd. There is something specific in her voice and way of being that intrigues me ever since I found out about her.
'Just as her music sometimes seems to have arrived from another planet, Lykke Li is not quite like anyone you’ve met before. Sometimes nervous but exceptionally impatient, she knows she’s almost too fragile for the success that lies ahead, but she’s storming on regardless.'
Although she's young artist, her music legacy has grown quite big, so it took me some time to collect it here. Hopefully it will be helpful in exploring musical world of Lykke Li.

'Lykke Li was born in Ystad, Skåne in 1986; her mother, Kärsti Stiege, had been a member of an all-girl punk band called Tant Strul before settling into photography. The family moved to Stockholm when Li was a toddler and later moved to a mountaintop in Portugal when she was six, where they lived for five years. The family also spent time in Lisbon and Morocco and spent winters in Nepal and India. She moved to the neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn in New York for three months when she was 19.
